Are you looking for ways you can add meaning to life?
I always enjoyed working and the rewards that come with it. While being a mother is one of the most rewarding jobs a woman can have, it wasn’t the only thing I wanted to do with my life. It’s the 21st century, which means it’s a possibility for you to be a mother and while having many ways you can add meaning to life.
Meaning is a word with a definition that is different for everyone. What creates meaning inside of me is different than what creates it for you. It’s likely that we may have similar answers if asked what gives us meaning, but we’re going to have some differences to compare too. For each one of us, a meaningful life is something that is unique to each and every one of us.
It doesn’t have to be difficult.
Adding some meaning to your life doesn’t have to be this complex thing. It doesn’t have to be worrying about finding a babysitter so you can find a 9-5 and be the breadwinner of the house. (Newsflash, staying at home and raising your children is a breadwinner in and of itself. You just get paid in giggles and toddler talk instead.)
There are many things each one of us can do daily that will help us find more meaning in life. And if you have a crazy, busy life it may take you a few minutes to come up with a list of even 5 things that are meaningful to you. It’s okay, though, because sometimes it takes a moment to pull ourselves out of that haze we have allowed to build up in our mind over time from scrambling to get the kids breakfast and out the door for school and turning in a report by the deadline we were given at work.
To make it a little easier for you (because life is hectic enough), I’ve compiled a list of 10 positive ways you can add meaning to life. All can be applied without needing to make big changes that will disrupt your daily routine.
Drink plenty of water.
The first of many ways you can add meaning to life. Drinking water is something so simple and yet many people skip over it. Realistically, we should be drinking 8 glasses a day. Sometimes more depending on other factors like how much you’ve been sweating or if you’re pregnant. Lack of water will create dehydration and feelings of sluggishness and other yucky feelings. Water is crucial for so many reasons! If you want to check out a list of the benefits of water then check out this post that lists 7 science-based health benefits. All in all, make sure you’re getting your daily intake and track it on your daily to-do list!
Make breakfast a priority.
Eating breakfast is a way to replenish your body with what it needs after fasting all night. Make sure you’re starting your day with nutrition. If you’re not a big breakfast person then choose something light like a fruit bowl or a fruit and yogurt parfait! Or grab a banana on the go. Either way, make sure you’re taking care of yourself by feeding your body what it needs.
Read and learn something new.
No one should ever stop learning. Don’t become stagnant. Just because we’re grown ups and no longer in school doesn’t mean we can’t work our brain muscles just as much. Find a topic that interests you and read away. You’ll be surprised how good it makes you feel! Then check it off of your to-do list.
Don’t dwell on the past.
There’s a reason why it’s there to begin with. We’re in this thing called life. Lack of control is almost synonymous with it. You can’t control everything and so sometimes things will happen. We deal with it in the moment, but at the same time, we have to find peace with it (for ourselves) and move on. Once it’s in the past, leave it there. You’ll be happier and be able to say you’ve trained yourself to live in the present moment.
Don’t compare yourself to others.
Something all of us have done and probably still do way too often. It’s degrading to our minds and bodies. It’s an unnecessary weight that we put on our shoulders. What does it matter if someone is wearing sneakers that look more expensive than ours? It doesn’t. We put the meaning behind silly things then choose to compare ourselves when in reality we’d be so much happier if we accepted everyone as they are, including ourselves! Feeling happiness will create those vibes of meaning to spread throughout yourself.
Listen to peaceful music.
Maybe start your morning with some meditation music while you’re getting ready for work or drinking your morning coffee. It’s calming and keeps us in a peaceful state of mind as we start our day. If you find yourself stressed out during the day, do the same thing. Search for some meditation or calming music on Spotify or Youtube! You won’t be wasting your time worrying and stressing yourself out, which will give you a little more meaning in your life.
Wear clothes that make you happy.
I know this one sound a little materialistic, which isn’t my intent. The message here is that you should wear what feels good to you, whatever that may be. If that’s a dress then go for it! If it’s a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie then go for it! Don’t take away from what’ll make you happy because you’re afraid of what other people may think.
Enjoy some fresh air. Go for a run. Take the kids or dogs for a walk. Soak up some vitamin D. It’s calming and will give you the chance to take some deep breaths and release your worries and anxieties before you head back home.
I know it’s not always possible, especially if you’re raising a family. The playroom is always a mess and toys are all over the place. I get it. But having some kind of system in place for organization helps us keep a clear mind and lessens our stress load. Even if you’re only able to keep one room in the house organized, then do it! Keeping any amount of space clean when you have children is one of the ways you can add meaning to life.
Write down 10 things you’re grateful for every day. Focusing on what you have rather than what you don’t have will make you feel better about life. Good thoughts don’t come from seeing what we’re lacking, but they do come from appreciating all we have been blessed with. Out of all the ways you can add meaning to life, this one is my favorite.
There are 10 ways you can add meaning to your life. Add them to your daily to-do lists, set alarms on your phone as reminders, etc. Not only do I hope they add more meaning to your life, but I hope they help create some balance and confidence in your life too.
